Love Food Enough To Not Waste It – Practice Makan Mantra
Singapore is food
haven: we can find delicious food everywhere. With that though, the social
gatherings over food and love of variety results in extensive food wastage;
which impacts our environment.Makan Mantra is a strategic campaign that aims to reduce the amount of food wasted in Singapore. The campaign aims to increase understanding of the impacts of food waste, and to encourage adoption of methods that can alleviate this problem. It is the brainchild and final year project of four final year students from the Wee Kim Wee School of Communication & Information at Nanyang Technological University.
Join Black Box on a journey of discovery into awareness and
adopting good habits to reduce food waste with makan mantra.
Five compelling reasons why we should stop wasting food
1.
Increasing world population – with more mouths to feed (an extra 3
billion by the end of this century), sustaining resources such as food and
water is an even more pressing issue than dealing with traffic jams and housing
demands.
2.
Greenhouse effect – food waste ends up in landfills where they emit
greenhouse gases that contribute to global warming.
3.
Nothing wrong with buying and eating produce that look less than perfect
– in Singapore, supermarkets discard up to 30,000 kilos of unappealing
vegetable parts and blemished fruits EVERYDAY through a process called cosmetic
filtering. We should really put more thought into the nutritional value and
taste of produce when choosing what to buy instead of how it looks.
4.
Catering for “just enough” – events and festivities result in
over-catering of food and produces lots of wastage. Many times with careful
planning by the hosts leftover food can be greatly reduced while still
maintaining decorum.
5.
Love our food and the labour that goes into it – appreciating the time
and effort taken to produce the food (not mentioning the painstaking effort
that farmers take to produce the ingredients) on our plate makes us love our
food even more and so to pledge not to waste it.
